Corporal Danny Winter, of 45 Commando Royal Marines, was killed, aged 28, in an explosion in Afghanistan on 14 January, 2009.

Captain Tom Sawyer , from 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery, died in the same incident.

At the time Cpl Winter 's unit, Zulu Company, to which Capt Sawyer was attached, was involved in a joint operation with the Danish Battle Group and the Afghan National Army to clear compounds in a known Taliban stronghold, north east of Gereshk in central Helmand.

As a mortar fire controller, Cpl Winter's role was to provide mortar support to the frontline of the fighting troop and he died carrying out this vital task.

Cpl Winter, from Stockport, joined the Royal Marines at the age of 16.

As a heavy weapons specialist, he served with both 40 Commando and 45 Commando and had seen action in Northern Ireland and Iraq, before two deployments in Afghanistan.

Mother, please don't mourn for me
I'm still here, though you don't see
I'm right by your side each night and day
And within your heart I long to stay
My body is gone but I'm always near
I'm everything you feel, see or hear
My spirit is free, but I'll never depart
As long as you keep me alive in your heart
I'll never wander out of your sight!
I'm the brightest star on a summer night
I'll never be beyond your reach
I'm the warm moist sand when you're at the beach
I'm the colourful leaves when autumn comes around
And the pure white snow that blankets the ground
I'm the beautiful flowers of which you're so fond
The clear cool water in a quiet pond
I'm the first bright blossom you'll see in the spring
The first warm raindrop that April will bring
I'm the first ray of light when the sun starts to shine
And you'll see that the face in the moon is mine
When you start thinking there's no one to love you
You can talk to me through the Lord above you
I'll whisper my answer through the leaves on the trees
And you'll feel my presence in the soft summer breeze
I'm the hot salty tears that flow when you weep
And the beautiful dreams that come while you sleep
I'm the smile you see on baby's face
Just look for me, Mum….

I’M EVERYPLACE !

3 long heartbreaking years son. xxxx

ANGEL IN HEAVEN
AT CHRISTMAS

The gift of life is given
Then it’s cruelly snatched away,
It leaves so many broken hearts & sadness come what may,
Especially now at Christmas
Which you loved with all your heart
The thought of you not being here
Is tearing us apart,
And yet we must be thankful
For the happy times we spent,
When love & laughter filled the air, before the magic went.
The pictures are so clear today of a happy smiling face,
The kind of perfect loveliness that no-one can replace,
This little Christmas message is to let you know for sure
That love that’s felt for you lives on
And will forever more.

Missing You Son At Christmas

Everybody’s rushing round
Full of festive cheer
But I’m finding all I want to do
At Christmas is come here

To talk to you a little while
And chat a minute or two
I can’t buy you a present
So what else can I do

Remember Son, I Love You
I’m still hurting with the pain
I don’t think it will ever stop
Until I’m with you once again

I Love and miss you Dan xxx

PLEASE WEAR A POPPY

'Please wear a poppy,' the lady said
And held one forth, but I shook my head.
Then I stopped and watched as she offered them there,
And her face was old and lined with care;
But beneath the scars the years had made
There remained a smile that refused to fade.

A boy came whistling down the street,
Bouncing along on care-free feet.
His smile was full of joy and fun,
'Lady,' said he, 'may I have one?'
When she's pinned in on he turned to say,
'Why do we wear a poppy today?'

The lady smiled in her wistful way
And answered, 'This is Remembrance Day,
And the poppy there is the symbol for
The gallant men who died in war.
And because they did, you and I are free -
That's why we wear a poppy, you see.

'I had a boy about your size,
With golden hair and big blue eyes.
He loved to play and jump and shout,
Free as a bird he would race about.
As the years went by he learned and grew
and became a man - as you will, too.

'He was fine and strong, with a boyish smile,
But he'd seemed with us such a little while
When war broke out and he went away.
I still remember his face that day
When he smiled at me and said, Goodbye,
I'll be back soon, Mom, so please don't cry.

'But the war went on and he had to stay,
And all I could do was wait and pray.
His letters told of the awful fight,
(I can see it still in my dreams at night),
With the tanks and guns and cruel barbed wire,
And the mines and bullets, the bombs and fire.

'Till at last, at last, the war was won -
And that's why we wear a poppy son.'
The small boy turned as if to go,
Then said, 'Thanks, lady, I'm glad to know.
That sure did sound like an awful fight,
But your son - did he come back all right?'

A tear rolled down each faded check;
She shook her head, but didn't speak.
I slunk away in a sort of shame,
And if you were me you'd have done the same;
For our thanks, in giving, if oft delayed,
Thought our freedom was bought - and thousands paid!

And so when we see a poppy worn,
Let us reflect on the burden borne,
By those who gave their very all
When asked to answer their country's call
That we at home in peace might live.
Then wear a poppy! Remember - and give!

It's only small but it means a lot,
To tell you Son, we have not forgot,
Someone still loves you, someone still cares,
Someone still whispers your name in their prayers,
A place in our hearts is yours alone,
A place of love no one can own,
You live in our hearts and walk by our sides,
From Heaven above you're always our guide.
I miss you so much xxxx
